Evia Apartment - Nea Stira
Evia is the 2nd largest island after Crete. Its full
of mountains, forests, sandy beaches, hot springs.
There are few tourists other than Greeks, who arrive
mostly in August.
Brand New Luxury 2 Bed Apartment.
What one can do in Evia:
a) Mountaineering – Mount Ochi is a local peak. The
taxi in town can take you there and back. Also has
very large mountain gorge and famous middle ages
remains of mountain homes known as Dragospita (10 min
away by taxi from New Stira). Old Stira is also a
local attraction with its town square and Orthodox
church in the centre dating back hundreds of years.
b) Cycling – Apart from cycling into town (2-3
minutes) you can take the single road past the house
in the opposite direction (from the town centre) and
aim for the large windmill style turbines (electricity
generators). Once you reach there (10-15 min) there is
a large road with a junction in the middle of it. If
you cross it and follow the small road aiming for the
village of Tsakei at the end of the winding road
(10-15 min) there are other beaches, facing the other
side of the island (Aegean sea). You will notice a
house on the beach and a statue (WWII Resistance
fighter). If you follow the road round you will find
other beaches and superb fish restaurants. If you stay
on the first beach with the old house on it and swim
100 yards out to the left you will find a hidden sandy
alcove where you can rest, sunbathe and relax in the
crystal blue sea
c) Walking- From the house if you walk to the beach
directly across you can then take the sea path into
the town centre. This is a popular route in the
evening with the sunset. Most Greeks eat late in the
evening and the small town centre is busy at this
time. There are two souvlaki eateries where you can
order beer from the barrel, cold.
d) Cinema- In the summer months there is an open air
cinema, like in the film Cinema Paradiso. Entrance is
around 7Euro per person and the films change every two
days. All English language films are subtitled so
there is no problem in understanding what is on. The
same applies for most tv programmes and movies.
Connections:
Bus Service- There is a bus service that connects all
major towns in Evia. Details can be found in the town
centre. Timetables and frequency of service change
according to the season.
Taxi Service – Found in the town centre just opposite
the ferry port. If you ask a taxidriver for his card
he can come and pick you up if you want him to.
